error message trouble

Dave Flounders

I am receiving an errror message at the start-up of Visio that says

"Visio could not find this add-on or one of it's files. An error occured
and this feature is no longer functioning properly. Would you like to repair
this feature now?"

After answering yes, the repair is carried out, which requires a computer
restart, but after the restart the same error message appears again. There is
no indication of which file or add-on is causing the error

Does this happen for any particular drawing type or for all drawings?

Have a look at the Visio addons and startup paths

menu Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> File Paths

Hi Dave,

Which version of Visio are you using?

Does the message say which add-on is causing the problem?

Have you installed any additional Visio-solutions/add-ons that might be
causing a problem?

Try looking under Tools > Trust Center > Add-ins (in Visio 2007) and see
if anything looks odd. Note the "Manage COM Add-ins" button/drop-down at
the bottom of the dialog.

Hi Chris,
I'm using Visio 2003 Pro. There are no indictions of which file or add-on is
the problem. I haven't added anything or changed Visio since I installed it,
this is a recent problem.

Hi Paul,

When I followed your suggestion i found that there was no file path
specified for the add-ons. Problem solved. Thank you very much.

Um, well, you shouldn't normally need anything in the file path unless
you have 3rd part addins installed.

The problem has returned, but this time I think I have narrowed the problem
down to the Adobe Acrobat add-on. When the error massage appeared I noticed
that the Abode Tools had disappeared from the toolbar. When I attempted the
'repair'option, this time I received a message telling me that I need to
restart the computer to complete the add-on process for Acrobat. Can anyone
suggest how to resolve this issue

It sounds like you already discovered the cause of the issue; you mentioned
the Adobe add-on for Visio. In some of the older versions of Adobe the
add-on created some problems, however I believe this has been fixed in the
more recent versions of Adobe.

Hi,

Has anyone come up with a solution to this problem? I've been having
trouble with this one for at least a month now and it's simply driving me
nuts!

Visio 2003 / Adobe Acrobat 7.0.9

Please help.

Thanks!

Hello Helen,

I was also having this problem. In an older tip I found in a search, the
recomendation was to delete the "C:\Documents and Settings\<login name>\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Visio" directory.

However, it and the only file in it would always return. That file is
"content.dat". Not sure how it is being built.

Anyway, I decided to take a look in "content.dat". It turned out to be a
simple text file which you can open in Notepad. It it is a list of items to
load when Visio starts.

In it I found references to the offending PDFMaker add-ins which I had
previously deleted. You will have to identify the missing add-in causing
your problem. I deleted the lines refering to the missing add-ins and saved
the file.

Now Visio starts without an error message.

Hope this helps,

Joe
