Error message using Powerpoint 97 and Win XP

I am receiving the following message while working on several
Powerpoint 97 (part of Office 97) files under Win XP. I am selecting
text to change font and color and recieve this message.
Powerpoint found an error that it can't correct. You should save
presentations, exit, the restart Powerpoint.

I tried this with no success.

What is the solution?

The problem was my default printer is on the network and was turned
off. Turning it back on resolved the problem
