Error message when creating a recurring appointment

I have a user who shares his personal calendar with two assistants. These
assistants along with the calendar owner create recurring calendar
appointments. The assistants are now receiving a "not enough memory
available to perform the operation" message when they try to add new
appointments. When you open the users mailbox, over 1600 reminders pop-up,
some date back an entire year. As the users removes some of these
appointments and gets down to around 1100 or so reminders, the assistants can
once again add appointments. What can be causing this? Is there a way
around it? Is there a limit to the number of calendar items you can have
stored in your calendar?

All users are using Outlook 2003 and mailboxes reside on a Windows 2003
server with Exchange 2003.

Thanks
