Error mesage 452

My distribution lists have returned this error message - 452 Too many recipients in message - hasn't happened before. My lists (x 2) are approx 500 address each. Do I have to keep them below this figure? If so what is the maximum address you can have in a distribution list?
Any help gretaly appreciated as i can't find any in the Help files....
