Error msg when emptying Deleted Items in Outlook 2002

When trying to empty the Deleted Items in Outlook 2002, I get the following
error message:
"The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem
persists, start Outlook again."

This same error occurs when deleting some (but not all) items individually.
