Error opening Excel from Explorer

R

Ron Adams

Hi

I have WINXP SP1 and Office XP (Excel2002) and have just noticed that for
XLS files I cannot directly
open files from Windows Explorer.
I get a message "Unable to read file"
But I then click TWICE and it opens fine - and not in a read-only form
either.

Can someone point me in the direction of how to fix this please?

TIA

Ron

Absolutely not an expert but, anytime I've had problems of this nature
(strange things when opening a file from explorer) I've relied on the
following that was provided by Gord Dibben and quoted below;
"
If not using a shortcut, you should try re-registering Excel.
Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver" (no quotes and note the space before
the / mark).
Then re-register by Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"
You may have to enter your full path to excel.exe....in that case
surround with quotes as in..... "C:\mypath\toExcel\somewhere\excel.exe"
/unregserver
"
