error receiving smtp emails error 0x8004210a

I receive this error when receiving emails. I went to KB article 813518 and the workaround MS suggests, is to turn off checking incoming emails in Norton AV. I am reluctant to do this as so many virus and worms are received. Any other suggestions? What are the downside of turning off the auto scan?
