I have completed a database on Access 2000 on my PC which
runs on Windows 98.
when I copy it to a PC running on Windows2000 it crashes
with the message
"Error unrecognised database format"

What does that mean and how can I fix it?

Um, it means "unrecognised database format"?

You imply it happened just by copying your mdb to a Win2K machine. Is that
actually true? All the story? (does it still work if you copy it back to your
own machine?)

Two things can happen (possibly more <g>)
-The database got corrupted. Repair it.
-The Win2K machine does not have a satisfactory installation of MS-Access. If
it was just a different Access version, I would expect it to ask something
like "do you want to upgrade".
-Did you test it or did you just stuff it out?

If you're a developer, you're expected to have some basic "nouse" as to how to
go about isolating a problem from a general point of view. Presumably you're
being paid to do just that.

It still works perfectly on my PC.
So, what is likely to be the problem and how can I fix it?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is the other PC running an earlier version of Access? That would cause this
error I think. If the other PC is running Access97, then you would need to use
Tools,Database Utilities, Convert to Previous Version (something like that).
However, there can be problems converting backwards.

How do I find the curruption on the database and how do I
Tools, Database Utilities, Compact & Repair Database. (depends a bit on
version)
(or put /compact or /repair on the command line)
You can run this anytime, it does no harm provided it doesn't bomb out but
best take a copy beforehand.
It's worth doing this say monthly for the compact anyway.

There's a "JetComp" utility which can also be tried if the above doesn't work
support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;273956

If still corrupted, visit the professionals:
www.pksolutions.com

It's also possible to have "corrupted data", which would show as a bomb-out
when you scroll through a table. The only way I know to fix that is to delete
a table's data by diminishing halves until you zero in on the naughty record.
This is rare however.
