Error when installing SP1 for Office XP

trying to install SP1 for Office XP Pro and I get this error:

"Error 1328. Error applying patch to C:\Config Msi\PT***.tmp. It has
probably been updated by other means and can no longer be modified by this
patch. "

Is there a workaround? Am I stuffed and can't upgrade this version?

Thanks - I found the answer AND the answer for SP2 as well!
