Error when opening form, relating to Windows Critical Security update: KB916281

I'm running XP and Office 2000. When I try to open a form, I get the
following error:
Function is not available in expressions in Query expression
'Left([Incident_Number],7)'.

This problem started after Windows Critical Security update #KB916281 was
installed. If I uninstall the update, I don't get the error message,
however, I'd like to keep the update installed.

Does anyone know what I can do to fix this issue?
