Error when start Outlook 2003

Hi,

Now and then, after the user restarts his machine, he restarts Outlook and
gets the following error:

The data file 'Mailbox-Smith, Mike' was not closed properly.
The file is being checked for problems.

And after that everything is fine. However, it's good to know what causes it?

His mailbox is on the server, and he is the only who has this problem.
Does anyone know the answer and if there is any fix for this? Thanks.

when the machine is closed while outlook still has a hold on the mailbox,
you'll get this dialog. It also happens if you use task manager to close
outlook. It's always happened, except older versions never told you why it
took so long to start up. if he uses a pda, removing it from the cradle
before closing outlook should prevent the dialog (most of the time).

It's pretty much the same as you running scanpst but it's all automated.

Hello Dianne,

He closed the Outlook just as usual, and there was no indication or message
saying that Outlook was still holding the mailbox. He didn't use the task
manager to close Outlook, and he didn't have a PDA which sync with Outlook,
either.

The last time that the message poped up was after we applied the security
patches, closed all the application programs, and restarted windows. However,
we could duplicate the error. We just don't know when it will be back.

Thanks for your reply.

it's really not a big deal... outlook is just making sure the file isn't
damaged.

It will be more comfortable for the user to know what makes Outlook holds on
the mailbox and triggers the warning message even though he understands that
in the worst scenario if his mailbox is corrupted, we still can recover it
from the backup.

Thanks for your reply.
