Error when using Linked Excel file in Query

I have a database that was initially Access 97; upon new
version Access 2002, I converted the database to Access
2000.

I relinked the Excel data source. I am trying to do a new
query using the excel data and I keep receiving the
following error:

<external table is not in the expected format>

Can this be resolved? How?
