Error while opening .doc file

Pressing the Alt key will bring up the traditional Menu or if you want them
up permanently, go into Organize, Layout and check Toolbar.

This thread/post was posted by me. And I resloved it. Reinstalling of MS
Office takes hardly 15-20 mins than doing R&D on this issue.

I re-read this thread and if the issue you were encountering (and was the
inability to open Word Documents outside of the application, such as
double-clicking them on the Desktop, then I can see how reinstalling would
resolve the issue. The underlying issue was in your file associations and
recreating them rectifies it. Reinstalling is one way but there's also using
the winword /r command (which only recreates the Registry entries and
doesn't recreate any of the Office files) Terry noted previously which, for
Office 2007, takes about 5 minutes less than reinstalling. ;-)

Well I apologize for "hijacking" a thread, it just seemed redundant and
stupid to start a new thread if I was having a similar issue. Also by
woking
through it with two people with the same issue a resolution might be found
faster.

It may seem redundant and it may seem faster but typically it's not.
Typically when issues are combined it ends up taking longer than it should.
:) Word errors are like "human aches", the pain may be the same but the
cause can be attributed to numerous factors. You need to look at the
individual symptoms on an individual basis or they'll intertwine and could
cause more confusion. This thread is a good example of how that can happen.
Here's a summary:

TDesai posted: I am having issue with opening .doc file.
Terry provided the most recommended cure: to recreate the file associations
using the winword /r command.
Nathan posted: I tried editing the Registry and can't find the Data key
along with something about add-ins.

Nathan's post is the first I saw in the thread since I use OE to read the
newsgroups and it doesn't always download all posts. The thread goes a bit
off topic in helping Nathan find the Data key (which in retrospect he
doesn't really need to do anyway since add-ins and the Data key have nothing
to do with file associations - or opening files outside the application.
It's like trying to use antifungal foot cream to cure a headache). Several
days later after attempting to ascertain the problem Nathan is having
exactly, I download all posts in the newsgroup and realize Nathan added his
post to TDesai's who was having difficulty opening files outside of the
application. I ask for clarity on the issue Nathan is encountering and
finally we're back on track in helping to resolve the issue that was
initially posted: Troubleshooting opening files outside the application -
not encountering errors starting Word.

I suspect if you started a new thread you'd already have your solution and
we wouldn't have ended up providing solutions for foot fungus when we should
have been focusing on a headache. <grin> No worries, though, it happens all
of the time. :)

It is all .doc files that I try to open by double clicking from the desktop
or file explorer. If I open word first and then use the open option from
there it will open the file. I also tried to right click the file and
choose the program to open the file type with and word is not an option from
there. So I clicked the link to choose another program and select winword
for the program but then it uses wordpad as the default program

If running the winword /r command Terry gave you previously doesn't rectify
it then you may need to be a little more aggressive. Open the Windows
Explorer, such as My Computer, go to Tools/Folder Options and on the File
Types tab delete the file extension for Word 97-2003 (*.doc) files. Then go
to Start/Run and run the winword /r command again. Note there is a space
before the forward slash.

When I do this there is no File Types Tab. The only tabs are "General", "View", and "Search". Am I missing a step? I am running Windows Vista Ultimate.
