error with word 2003

I tried to open a doc generated by someone else with some word
version.

Get the error message:

<< Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these
suggestions
*Check permission for doc or drive
*Make sure there is enough memory
*Open with TExt Recover Converter >>

For the record:
*permission = fine
*memory = fine
*converter = same error

Now I have opened the file with no problem on another pc using word
xp; I have saved the doc with another name AND I could open it on my
pc using word 2003.

Can anyone explain this and tell what to do in similar cases (we
cannot run the two version of office on the same machine....)?
