not accept product key due to missing item above. Tried a repair with backup

and use the backup disk supplied to reinstall?

If your new computer came with a trial version of Office 2003,
and you get this missing .cab error message when trying to
install a full version of Office 2003 from a genuine Microsoft
CD, then I suggest you uninstall the trial version before you
install the full version. If you are trying to do something
else, then maybe you can elaborate a bit more on what you want to
do, because we can't see over your shoulder from here.

My computer came with a trial office student and teachers version which as I
recall was good for 80 days. Prior to the time running out I paid to keep
the program which included a back up disk. I was given the product key when
I paid Microsoft online. I did not uninstall as HP had loading this program
at the factory which I assumed was the complete edition.

Hi Pilot,

That .cab file is one that holds 33 fonts for MS Office 2003. If it is on your Office 2003 product CD, but you're getting a .cab
file error it can be a sign that the Office Local Installation Source (LIS) (basically files extracted from the CD to usually keep
you from needing the CD <g>) has become corrupted or gone missing.

Somtimes you can resolve it by finding the 'CD image' that the OEM may have placed on your hard drive to install from

In others, copying the Office 2003 CD to a new folder on your PC and installing from there can help, but if Office was already
installed and if you can't complete a repair/reinstall from the Microsoft Office 2003 listing in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows
control panel then you may need to delete then rebuild the LIS stored in the hidden folder, \MSOcache using the LIS-Tool and
step-by-step instructions available from this link.

One of the causes of this can be from using 'registry' or 'pc cleanup' utilities that sometimes break more than they fix.
