I have been trying to check for office updates for several days and I keep
getting the message that the download site is having technical difficulties
so the updates are unavailable. Does anyone know what the issue is and how
to get necessary updates.

Thank for the prompt reply. In step number three is says to delete the
Office Update detection folder. I do not have this folder on my system.
Does this indicate anything to you and do you have any further suggestions.
