errors when opening Word; unable to open

When I try to double click on the Word icon to enter the program I get the
following error: OE: 0197: BFF8E64B and then the program freezes and i have
to shut off the computer. Recently it gave me the following error: "Winword
has caused an error in USER.EXE; will now close" and again if froze. I've
tried repairing it with the CD, getting updates, running my computer
maintenance, system restore, opening it from both the ICON and Start
Menu...and am still having the same problem. HELP!!!!! (Plus I just don't
know much about computers!!)

This is an ACCESS NEWSGROUP. You might try searching for your answer before
you ask others to do so for you. I bet if you type that error in google the
very first response will tell you how to handle it.

Please try to help yourself before asking others.

From what you describe, my knee-jerk reaction is a bad Word program,
either caused by a bad chunk of your hard drive or a virus has infected your
machine or, maybe, something over-smashed it on the hard drive. Do this.
Start by un-installing Microsoft Office. I'm presuming that you do have the
install disks, right? Then, re-install it and try it again. If the problem
is still there, things could be more serious. You'll have to run a disk scan
diagnostic. Depending on your operating system, you may or may not have such
a diagnostic built in. If you do, you'll find it under Programs,
Accessories, System Tools. It will be called SCANDISK (but not the Disk
Cleaner, that's different). If you don't have a disk scanner, you can find
lots of free ones on www.handyarchive.com or www.freewarefiles.com. Just
remember, you get what you pay for.
