Even after changing it to 0, I cannot remove the gutter on my doc

Sounds like your margins are causing a gutter by having different odd/even
pages.

From the File menu, select Page Setup, the go to the Margins tab and in the
"Pages" section of the dialog, change the setting fo the "Multiple pages:"
to Normal.
