Excel 08 opens every file in doc folder on opening

When I first open Excel, it opens all the 1st level openable files in my Document folder. After closing all these files the ap works normally but it's an obvious pain because there are more that 20 files, even csv's and an xk2 file.
What's the trick to stopping this action?

You have probably mistakenly specified you documents folder as the start up
folder instead of the Preferred file location. Check in Excel preferences,
General Tab, and remove your documents folder from the ³At Start up Open all
files...² selection
