Excel 2000 again

Hello,

I created a folder and dragged and dropped a file into it and now I can
not open it at all. I get the message that it is read only or encrypted. I
can not access it at all. Can someone help me?

I used to get this when retrieving files from CD's.........maybe just re-set
the attributes on the file, or open the file from it's original location and
then saveas to where you want it to go..........

I just tried your suggestion and it did not work. Do you have any other
suggestions?

Are you saying that you can open the file from it's original location and
that no matter where you SaveAs it to, that you cannot re-open it from that
location.......or that you can not open the subject file, only if saved in
the specific directory that you just created..........

Could be the file is protected, (if so contact the original author), or
perhaps corrupt. Is there a copy with an earlier date around
somewhere.........maybe MIS can retrieve one from the Archive.

I don't think the person who created the file protected it. I don't think
that he is knowledgeable enough. I tried just about everything I could think
of, plus tried your suggestions an still no luck. As far as trying to
retrieve an archived file, I would not even know where to begin with that!

Retrieving the archived file would be something that your MIS dept would have
to do, providing the file is on a company network.....if so, just call them
and give them the filename........the only other thing I can think of is
maybe to get someone else to try to open the file for you.......sometimes
files that are difficult to open will open nicely in ExcelXP, then can be
re-saved.

We are only workgrouped, I tried to send the file to myself so I can try to
open it, however, the file can not be sent, the message reads that file can
not be sent because the file is read only or encrypted. So I am back to
square one again!

So maybe the file is corrupted. Check in Windows Explorer to see if the
filesize is what you would expect it to be......then maybe look around the
directory where the file was originally and see if there is any file with
some cryptic name that does not make any sense......if so, it may be the file
in disguise......try opening it......and if all else fails, ask the original
author for a good copy.

I'll give that a shot! But as far as the good copy, that is the file that is
not opening.

I am having the same problem but only I created this file and all my other
..xls files myself and now I am getting the same read only or encrypted
message and they have not been encrypted and if I reboot my computer I can
open them again for awhile and then they give me the message again but its
not just one file its a bunch of my .xls files. They are stored on my
"Server" computer and this happens when I am accessing them from my laptop
across my home network, and also if I am on my "Server" computer.
