Excel 2000 attachments coming as .DAT files?

When one of my users attaches an Excel spreadsheet to an e-
mail message (File-Send To-Mail Recipient) to one of her
contacts it never fails but it comes at the other end as
a .dat file. However, when sent from another machine on
our network to the same customer, it comes over just fine.

I've tried to check out antivirus stuff, nothing out of
the ordinary there, sent it from my machine to the same
customer (also using Office 2000), works fine.

I did change the mail format to HTML from Plain Text, and
then it stated to work, but now it is starting all over
again.

Any ideas welcome.

Yes they are. Now it seems changed the format setting
again to plain text (what it was originally) and now
evidently the customer can open it again.

I'm at about wits end here trying to figure this out.
