Excel 2000 - Change Default Cell Fill Color

L

Lori

One of those things that's just irked me for years...

How do I change the DEFAULT fill color from neon yellow to something else?
I know how to change the fill color once I'm w/in the spreadsheet but I just
don't want that hideous yellow as the default fill color every time I launch
Excel!

Silly, I know... It just annoys me and you would think there would be a
quick & easy place to set that....! If there is, I can't find it!

Hi Lori,

If I recall correctly you can change, as with other colors, the default colors for a specific workbook or template that are in
Tools=>Options=>Color, but even changing the default yellow color to something else, like gold, and saving in the \XLSTART folder as
BOOK.XLT (Excel's 'defaults' template) won't put the custom colors into a new workbook based on that template. If you change the
Yellow color in the top layout of the Color tab the color in that position (color 6) usually shows up as the default fill color, but
be sure to put yellow in as one of the other default available colors :)

There are a couple of ways to have it show up in new workbooks, one would be to save a template in the XLSTART folder named say,
'NoYellow.xlt] and then use File=>New and select that template to create your new workbook or to add a macro to BOOK.XLT that would
do the switch on new workbooks opened from the template. It would need separate actions or macros to change existing workbooks to
use that color.

You may want to also post in the MS Excel discussion group using the link below for specifics on being able to do that.

Macros... templates... GOOD GRIEF! I was hoping for a "Silly girl! There's
a check box located at such & such where you can change that across the
board!" ;)

Well I DID try changing the yellow in that particular position (duh - never
thought of doing that) to another color - and you're right - that DOES change
it as the default color w/in that spreadsheet! That solution is the one I'm
going to go w/! I have a few spreadsheets in particular that I work with
constantly and just making that change in them will be a huge help.

Thanks so much for your time & help!!
