Excel 2002 does not open file or save as file does not respond

Whenever I try to open an existing spreadsheet by
Looking through folders or when I try to save as & try
looking trough folders, excel hangs .

sometimes after a minute or so, it responds, but hangs
again when I continue serching trough folders.

Can anyone help ?
