Excel 2002, Menu and Tool bars are gone.

Steven

Hi,

Just had a call from a user that her Menu bar (File, Edit,
View, Tools, etc...) is gone from all spreadsheets.

I cannot restore them due to the menu bar being gone. How
can I replace this without using safe mode?

Any help is appreciated.

Cannot get to the View menu. None of the menus appear.
Let me see if I can get Full Screen off.

Ok,

By doing an Alt + F1 I was able to get to the chart
options. I closed the Workbook and got to Excel without a
open workbook. So now I right clicked and choose Toolbars
Customize.

What I have found out is that I am missing the following
options:

Standard
Formatting
Worksheet Menu Bar

When I attempt to add them manually Excel says they are
already there.

Any thoughts?

Try this

Close Excel
Do a search for *.xlb in windows
Rename the file you find (mine is named Excel10.xlb in 2002)
Start Excel

Deleting the file or renaming will do no harm on your system
Excel will create a new one for you.
(You lost your customization remember that)

If you make your own toolbars or add buttons to the others
This file is important (backup it so you can restore it)

Hi!

If there is no xlb file, Excel creates one when it starts up.

Maybe you didn't search hidden files and folders.

I have checked the defective PC and a known working
Machine. There is no *.xlb file on either machine.
Folder options are set to show hidden files on both PCs.
This file does not exist on either the bad system or a
working system.

Try this

In Win XP
Start>Search>for files and folders....All files and folders
There is a "More advanced options"

Curiouser and Curiouser!

Let's try a step by step. Apologies is it's annoying but this is
strange.

Start > Search > For Files and Folders
In file name box type *.xlb
Make sure that you are looking in Local Hard Drive (C:)
Search
Sit back.

I'm assuming that Excel is on C drive.

One very common error I make with Windows XP is not checking that it
is looking on Local Hard Drive and this limits the search (usually) to
the start folder.

View>toggle the Full Screen icon on/off. Does that help?

Probably not.

OP states the Menu Bar is gone. Hard to select View with no Menu Bar.

Thanks Norman appreciate your step by step. That's
exactly how I was checking the drive and still do not see
any *.xlb files at all. User had left for the day and
with today being New Year's Eve, not sure she will be back
or not. Will try again when she calls.

Hi Steven!

Quite mystifying!

Try opening Excel. Modify a toolbar by adding extra buttons. Close
Excel. Then check again.

Do you have a Personal.xls file that might be playing about with the
xlb file?

Are there any other files opened when Excel starts (look in Windows >
Unhide)

Do you have any unusual Addins.

But these are all given in desperation!

Alrighty,

Well I found a way to get the main menu bar back. I did
an ALT + F1 to go to Chart Mode. Then closed the work
book. I could then Right Click the grey area and go to
Customize.

From here I was able to choose Chart Menu Bar, which gave
me access to File, Edit, and View again. What I am now
noticing is this...

Under Customize I am missing the following items to select
from.

Standard
Formating
Reviewing
Worksheet Menu Bar

Any thougths where this could have gone?
