Excel 2003 formula bar question

Greetings,
I just upgraded from 2000 to 2003. In Excel 2000, when you were
typing in a formula, a small window would open up automatically under
the formula bar and say something like "value is ..." and give an
on-the-fly evalaution of the expression. I found this quite useful,
both as an error checking device and also because it allowed me to use
the formula bar itself as a quick calculator. Unless I'm missing
something, this functionality seems to be gone. Is there any chance
that there is some switch somewhere that can restore it?

Just hoping

Was it the same dialog you can see when you click on the fx button (to the left
of the formula bar)?

It wasn't a dialog at all. When I would type (say) =2^10 then I would
automatically be informed that the result was 1024 without having to
actually enter the formula into a cell. It was a way to try out a
formua before accepting it. The built in functions still have this
functionality in their dialog boxes - but simple arithmetical
expressions just typed in the formula bar used to have it in Excel 2000
if I recall correctly

I don't recall ever seeing anything like that.

Any chance it was an addin you found on the web somewhere?

I don't think it was an add-in. Now you have me questioning my sanity
(which is easy enough to do!). Anybody?

Maybe it was a function of the = button that is now missing from the
toolbar - about half the time I entered a formula manually I would use
that and the other half just type = manually, never paying too much
attention at the time.

In any event, thank you for your time.
