Excel 2003 issue with Windows XP Pro SP-2

Hi Folks,

I saw that this question had been posted by many people already, but I
could not find an answer for the same.

I am using Windows XP Pro Service pack 2 and Office 2003.

Scenario 1) I have a hyper link in a web page that opens up an Excel
document. When I click the link, I get the IE dialogue box with "Open'
and "Save" options. After that, if I click "open" it opens the Excel
Window without any data in it, but with an error message telling that

'C:\Documents and *****\--\--\abcd.xls' could not be found. Check the
spelling of the file name and verify thatthe file location is correct
blah blah blah --

Scenario 2) Before clicking the above mentioned link, if I open an
Excel instance manually (then click the link), the Excel docuement
opens up without any issue.

Scenario 2) Instead of clicking "Open" in the IE Dialogue box, if I
click 'Save" also, it works perfectly fine.

I have experienced the same issue with Windows XP Pro with Office 2000
also.

Could someone please help me out to resolve this ?

The standard fixes for this problem.......

Tools>Options>General uncheck "Ignore other Applications"
Exit Excel and try again

If this doesn't work try to re-register Excel

Close Excel first and
On the Windows Taskbar

1) Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.
2) Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.
See the space between exe and /regserver

You might have to designate a full path to excel.exe.
In that case Start>Run "C:\yourpath\excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.

One more thing to try if any of the above brings no joy.........

Go to Start>Settings>Folder>Options>File Types. Scroll down to MS Excel
Worksheet. Then if running Win98 OS Edit> select "Open" and Edit.

If using WinXP OS you would scroll down to .XLS then "Advanced">Open>Edit.

In Command line the path should be similar to this....

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE\EXCEL.EXE" /e (delete the <sp>/e if
you want Book1 to open.

You must have the double quotes.

Below have "use DDE" checked and this in the DDE message box....[open("%1")]

Application should read "Excel"(no quotes)

I've never seen this, but I don't use winXP and I don't open excel files in my
browser. If I click on a link to an excel file, I want to open it in excel.

If that's acceptible to you, maybe you could change a setting and see if that
makes your problem moot.

Sorry for not making it very clear for you. I am already doing what
ever you suggested. I am NOT trying to open the xls in IE, rather I am
opening it in Excel itself.

Thanks Dave for the reply. But, no luck so far.

But I learnt some interesting stuff. In XP there are "Super Hidden"
files under "C:\Documents And Setting\-\-\Temporary Internet Files". IE
is trying to write my Excel document temporarily to one of these
folders, if the Excel window is not open already.

In the error message that I get

-- "C:\Documents and Settings\--\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\UTGP956G \abcd.xls' could not be found. Check the
spelling of the file name and verify thatthe file location is correct
blah blah blah " -- ,

note that "Content.IE5" or any subfolder are "super hidden" and are not
accessible by any user (including admin). By doing some tricks you can
see these files in the Windows Explorer. But nothing more you can do.

I was wondering, if IE also has got some unexpected access issue while
trying to write this xls to this super hidden folder.

In win98, I can get to that folder via Windows explorer:
C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
(I can just paste it into the "address" bar or traverse the folders)

And I can get to it this way, too:

Also in win98, I can open windows explorer
rightclick on my C: drive
Choose properties|General Tab
click on the "disk cleanup" button

From there, I can click on Temporary Internet Files and then click on the View
files button.

Maybe cleaning up these files would help--but I wouldn't guess so.

I think the next step I would try is trying to find a pc equipped the same way
and write down the DDE screens that Gord suggested. Then back to the
troublesome pc and make it match.

(I was guessing that the unregserver & regserver stuff would do the dirty work.)

If you only need to look at an Excel spreadsheet, download the free
viewer. It will be somewhere on the MS Office website. If you need to
work with Excel spreadsheets, you can:

1. Buy Excel at the store.
2. Buy a different office program that will read Excel spreadsheets such
as Corel's Quattro Pro or Star Office.
3. Download the free OpenOffice which includes OpenOffice Calc from
www.openoffice.org.

If you will be working with Excel spreadsheets on a regular basis,
buying Excel is the best course of action.

Find out what files microsoft works 7 can open.
(The File|open dialog should have a list near the bottom)

Then open your workbook in excel and save a copy in that version.

Or maybe a free spreadsheet program would work for you:
http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD

And if all you want to do is look at the workbook, maybe the free viewer from
Microsoft would be sufficient:
