i have data in a column that looks like this - mar06-may07. i want to use
"text to column' and separate the two dates. i have formatted both columns
as text so it won't 'interpret' Mar06 as 3-Mar. BUT it won't stop formatting
the data as 3-Mar.

As you go thorugh the steps in the Text-to-columns wizard, and after the
wizard has recognized that you have 2 columns, select each of the 2 columns
and choose to recognize them as text

thanks. The minute i hit enter (after choosing the 'text' radio button) the
cell is changed to 6-mar.

it also assumes the year 2007 even though the data is march 06 and I chose
custom format = mmm-yy.

Where are you hitting enter? In my version of Excel 2003 there is a
"Finish" button to hit at the end of the Data/ Text to columns process, and
at that stage, having selected "text" for the format of each of the two
columns, it doesn't change it from mar06 or may 07 but leaves them as text.
