Excel 2007, can't edit 2003 document

When I open the excel 2003 document in 2007 we cannot edit nor view any
formulas in the formula bar, plus the ribbon is greyed out. The workbook is
not protected with read only. What is going on?

Is the workbook protected inside excel?
