Excel 2007 crashes when opening a file

I recently installed the trial version (hopefully, because paying
that
much money for a non-working software would have killed me) of MS
Office Home & Student on my brand new laptop (Acer Aspire 5684, Vista
Home Premium). Everything seems to be working fine except that
litteraly 99% of the time I try to open an file created with a
previous version of Excel (that is .xls files, created either by
OpenOffice or old versions of Excel), Excel 2007 just crashes with
the
following problem details :

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: EXCEL.EXE
Application Version: 12.0.6024.5000
Application Timestamp: 465f21c3
Fault Module Name: OLEAUT32.dll

Fault Module Timestamp: 4549bd95
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 000041c0
OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:
LCID: 1033
Brand: Office12Crash
skulcid: 1033

Interestingly, it doesn't crash so often (if at all) when loading
Excel, the opening the files via the menus. But still, this is very
very annoying. Anyway, until this problem is resolved, I won't buy
the
unlimited version of Office...

It also crashes from time to time while exiting... Seems to be random.

If anybody can help...

S.M.
