Excel 2007 documents will not open with double click

Suddenly my documents will not open if I double click on the name of the doc
in the documents folder from my start menu (or any where else). I get an
error message saying Windows cannot find this file, be sure you typed the
name correctly. If first I open Excel, then open the document from File...
Open... etc, this is the only way it will open. How can I fix this? THANKS!
