excel 2007 vlookup function in multi tables and columns

i havecolumns with the following heading:

name, type

under type i have a drop down list of

paid, unpaid, training etc

and i want to be able to auto populate a name and the difference types they
have done extracting the information from the table.

please can you help, i have tried reading up on it and get getting errors
