Before doing that, I would arbitrarily try setting a different printer
device as the default, then seeing if Excel still crashes. For example, if
Adobe PDF, Microsoft Office Document Image Writer, etc. show up in you list
of printers, then go through the control panel and set something non-HPish
as your default printer. If none of those show up, then arbitrarily install
the driver for a different printer (e.g., a Canon printer)--despite the fact
that you don't have that printer--set it as your default printer, and see if
the error still occurs.
If the error still occurs, then removing and reinstalling the HP printer
driver probably won't help. If the error doesn't occur, then it might be
worth trying. Alternatively, if there is a similar HP printer, you might try
installing the driver for it, and see if a) the error still occurs, and b)
the printer driver works with your printer.
In the past, I've been able to temporarily solve printer driver problems by
substituting a driver for a similar printer, and pretending that I'm using a
different printer.
