Excel 97 Fails to Open File

J

Jim Beachy

I have an apparently corrupted Excel 97 file. When I try
to open it in Excel 97, it appears to load but then
immediately closes the entire app. In Excel XP, it
appears to load and then disappears, leaving the
application open.

I've searched the kb but failed to find any tips on how I
might recover.

You may want to try to open the workbook with excel in safe mode to make sure it
isn't a "helpful" macro.

close excel
windows start button|Run
excel /safe

file|open your workbook.

Anything good happen?

If no...
You might be able to recover more by using another program OpenOffice has a
better reputation for opening files that excel couldn't.

(http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD)

If the file is really important, there are commercial recovery services. I've
never used it, but you might want to check into:

I have the same issue with one computer at work.

It's a shared file and opens on all the computers but one, so it'
probably not a macro (unless it's in the personal.xls).

I'll let you know if I come across anything.

Try 'www.fdrlab.com' (http://www.fdrlab.com/repair.html)
They can recover corrupted Excel files (incuding password protected
with all contained information, including comments, VBA, charts, link
etc.
No one software can do this completely.

Good Luck
