excel 97 file name problem

When I attempt to save an excel file, the file is saving only under
the first initial of the proposed name.

For instance, if I attempt to save file as "book1", the file is saved
as "b"


This just started happening. Any ideas why this is happening? How can
it be fixed? I have up to date virus protection and I don't think that
is the problem.

Any suggestions?

Check to see if Excel is running in Windows 95 compatibility mode.
