the formula bar is only showing me the last few characters of the cell
contents. they are in the right position, but everything to the left of
them in the formula bar is not visible. for example, cell may contain
123456789, but formula bar displays ' 89' (the quotes are mine to show
the start and end positions) with 7 completely blank spaces before the 89.
strangely, it is not consistent. sometimes it is more than 7 blank spaces.
if the cell contains few characters it usually shows me the last 2 on the
right. it happens for formulas as well as data.
here are some examples from a sheet infront of me now:

Employees ' es'
Director of Finance ' nce'
E 'E'
100.23 ' 23'
as I have copied those formula bar displays across from the formula bar on
the spreadsheet, they have brought all the characters with them. so the
spaces have invisible contents rather than being blank.
the final bit of info is: as i run the cursor quickly down a column, the
diplay in the formula bar occasionally shows me a quick glimpse of the
characters in the beginning of the cell. if I stop and go back to them
slowly it wont display them though.
I can find no mention of this problem anywhere on usenet or microsoft's kb.
