Excel 97 problem with naming workbooks

Lately "save as" only records the initial letter of a
proposed workboook file name. Any idea where to find the
problem?

Check to see if Excel is running in Windows 95 compatibility mode.

When I disabled compatibility mode the file name problem went away.
