Excel 97 Protect but allow comments

I know you can do this on XP but is there anyway of protecting a sheet or
book but still allow users to add cell comments with Excel 97? Many thanks.

AFAIK you have to at least unlock the respective cells before protecting the
sheets

I know a techie that has managed to achieve this without unlocking respective
cells, because users need to be able to add comments but not change the
content of the cells - will it have been done using a macro or something in
VB? Ta

If you do:

Tools|protection|protect sheet
You should see an option for "edit objects"
(I don't recall the wording for xl97, but if you allow users to edit objects,
then they can add/modify/delete comments--as well as other objects
(shapes/controls).)

Excel 97 the dialog box has 3 options when protecting the sheet.

Protect worksheet for

Contents
Objects
Scenarios

De-selecting Objects will allow the insertion of Comments in locked cells as
Dave points out.
