Excel / Access shared file update

I have a link in an Excel worksheet that is populating the
cells with information from an Access database. The excel
file is on a network, and is shared. Options were checked
to allow an automatic update on open, and refresh every 5
minutes. The External Data toolbar is visible in the
worksheet.

The problem is that the link and update work fine, as long
as the workbook is not shared. Once I set the option to
share it, it does not seem to update unless I remove the
sharing option, manually update all, then set the sharing
option.

I would like this sheet to maintain a record of the
changes made to it, but every time I update the file, the
tracking log is reset.

Have I made a tactical error expecting that this will
update in a shared environment? Or am I simply doing
something backwards?

As usual, I was unable to find out much in the "Help" file.

Thoughts and comments would be appreciated.
