Excel and entering dates

When I enter the following in a cell formatted for "date"; 01/04 instead of
changing it to the month and year correctly, it changes it to Jan-05. When I
click on the cell and look in the formula bar, it shows "1/04/2005". I just
want it to display the year and month, that's it but it keeps entering the
day in the middle. I've tried changing the format to mm/yy or something like
that, but it keeps doing it.

The other formula that I see that "should" display it right is:
[$-409]mmm-yy;@

not sure what all the symbols mean, but I know the mmm-yy is supposed to
show 3 characters for the month, and two for the year. But it keeps adding a
day in between.

If I enter =TODAY() in A1 and format it mm/yy it displays 01/05 (today being
Jan 12 2005)
