Excel and WebDav

We are using Office 2003 and have an application that allows the
creation/save/edit of an excel spreadsheet to a web share via WebDav.
We are getting some very inconsistent results. At times when we save a
file and then attempt to re-open it we are getting file lock messages
or the file opens and none of the changes were saved.

We have seent he following message appear in the event log of the PC.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: WebClient
Event Category: None
Event ID: 14904
Date: 2/10/2006
Time: 1:02:32 PM
User: N/A
Computer: HWPTS055
Description:
PROPPATCH failed for file
\servername\pwrim01predocs\d060206\m2600007.xls on SetFileInfo.
ErrorStatus: 5.

This is not a consistent issue and at times it works without any
issues. We have seen the error on Xp as well as 2003 server as a client.

We tested accessing files directly from Excel and were able to recreate
this issue. It appears to e an issue with Excel and Webdav.

did you link them together? I'm not sure about WebDav. but if you go to
Insert Object from file in Excel and then check the box that says link to
file it should work. or a better way if you are talking about different
companies across the world or USA is to save Excel spreadsheet as a WebPage.
Click the Publish button and then click the Add interactivity box on the
page. Select wheather to save the Entire Workbook or just the active spread
sheet. Click on Publish (although you may want to change the title) click on
AutoRepublish every time this workbook is saved and Open Published web page
in browser. Again from this dialog box you can choose to change the title
also i.e. company inventory. Click Publish and then open your web browser and
go to file and open and browse to the xls and see if it works. I've set up
several companies like this. Although I'm really not sure what you want the
end result to be.
