excel and word stopped working

Microsoft Office XP has been working fine. Now we can view existing files
but can't change anything, can't create new. For example, on a blank word
screen, any keystroke gets this message: "This command is not available
because it is locked for edit."

Hardly anything is available in the drop down boxes.

Can't do any keystrokes in excel or word!

HELP!!!!

Microsoft's Help system has landed you in the wrong newsgroup: this
one is for the database program Microsoft Access.

Please use the dropdown box (the one that says "Access" by default)
to select a more appropriate newsgroup, such as
microsoft.public.office.general.
