Excel and Word too after reinstall opens and closes down right awa

I just had to rebuild system I have windows XP pro and installed office 2000
and Excel and Word are both opening up and closing down right away. I have
tried repair, reinstalling after uninstall and nothing works.

What happens if you start them in safe mode:
Start, run, Excel.exe /safe
