Excel and years before 1904

Can excel handle years before 1904? I am trying to do a historical chart
that dates back to 1798.

You can use the 1900 date system to go back to 1900
(Preferences/Calculation/1904 date system checkbox).

For pre-1900 dates, see John Walkenbach's XDate add-in:
