Excel column headings from numbers to letters

My column headers in Excel (Office 2000) have switched from letters to
numbers. I would like to change them back to letters. How do I do this?

Try:

Tools | Options | General Tab | Deselect R1C1 reference style

TOOLS / OPTIONS / GENERAL
Then uncheck 'R1C1 Reference Style'
