excel comparisons using limt data

Can you compare data that has been entered as <NUM using wildcard to create
a general formula? eg IF(A2="<*",A2,A2*5) for data that contains <2, <5,
<0.5, plus real numbers that you want to use in a calculation such as
multiply by 5 as in the above example.
