Excel crashes on startup

I'm currently unable to open Excel - either by clicking on the Excel icon in my dock or by clicking on a particular excel file.

The software window sits there for a few minutes (seems to be stuck on the "font optimisation" stage), then I get an alert window which reads "The application Excel quit unexpectedly"

OK I have updated my version of Mac OS X to the latest, and also my version of Office X. It's still crashing, and so is Word. I can't open either of them.

What you've reported could very well indicate a Font conflict of some sort.
You may have success with using the OS X application Font Book [or some
other font management software] to identify & correct the issues, repair
disk permissions & shut down your Mac. The situation may very well be
rectified when you start up again. You might also try the procedures
suggested here although they're based on Office 2004 so you'll have to
interpret them for Office X:

I'm afraid I can't offer you the interpretation... I haven't even seen an
Office X installation in over 5 years & that was on a totally different
version of OS X - I'm not even sure which one, but probably 10.3.x.

Just as an FYI: Unfortunately we're seeing more & more problems arising from
the use of Office X on Leopard systems. That version of Office coincides
with the introduction of OS X 10.0.0 & virtually everything has changed
within the OS since then (not to mention the introduction of Intel-based
Macs). Especially since Office X has been end-of-life for quite some time
[there will be no further updates] I would expect to see the compatibility
gap widen significantly as OS X moves forward. Even if you don't want to or
can't upgrade to Office 2008 you may want to consider moving up to Office
2004 while it's still available.
