First, reinstalling Mac apps is almost always a waste of time - apps
themselves just don't corrupt very frequently. It's often prescribed for
WinTel, I suspect because reinstalling often fixes registry errors.
Those type of errors typically occur in Preferences on Macs.

And using a third-party app to do so wouldn't give me very much
confidence that I got everything (Office uses hidden files that may not
get caught). Better to use the Remove Office application that comes with
Office.

Repairing disk permissions with Disk Utility is a good idea, though it
rarely causes the kind of problems you're seeing.

One thing that has caused problems in the past is corrupt fonts - XL
seems to be more sensitive than other apps.

If your Preferences are corrupted, trashing or renaming these files
(with ALL Office apps closed or it won't work), should fix the problem:

In the ~:Library:preferences: folder (where ~ is your home directory):

com.microsoft.Excel.plist
com.microsoft.office.plist

and in the Microsoft:Office 2008 folder in the Preferences folder above:

Office Font Cache (12)

If it's something else in your system setup (a conflicting app, haxie,
etc), then try using a fresh Mac OS X account. And if it's been a long
time since you rebooted your machine, doing so will reset the system
font cache.
