Excel document converted to a word doc

This was actually an accident. We had an excel workbook
that was opened with Word and the user let it "open
document in workbook. Then when they left the
application, they selected save, and it said...This will
be saved in a word format. OK. Of course they hit OK.
However, we need this to run in excel. Is there any way
to convert it back???? In my directory it still has .xls
as the extension but when using excel to open it says its
an invalid format. It will open in Word. BUT as I said,
I need it to open in excel. Am I out of luck or can I
save my workbook?????

If you don't have a backup, you are out of luck.

Once you open it in Word, you could copy and paste into excel.

You may be able to save a little of the data--but a lot of stuff gets lost.
