excel doesn't registering/saving euro sign before number and negative numbers with red

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Power PC

I don't know how it happened but in one of my account file with several workbooks, I found euro sign (negative with red) cells have changed somehow and now I cannot change them back to their original format I created.

It is ever frustrating! what do you think the reason for this and how can i repair it?
