Excel file keeps saying it's in use... but no one has it open?!

B

Blaine

Hello,
I'm having this issue with one specific Excel file. A user "Schan" opened
the file, edited it and saved then closed it. She went back to the file a
few minutes later and the File was locked for editing by "Schan". When
others try to open the file it also says its locked for editing by "Schan".
We have tried saving the file as different names and placing in different
directories on the network all with the same conclusion. I have closed out
all the sessions on the server and even rebooted it but no luck. The only
way I have found to circumvent this is to save the file to a local drive.
This seems to allow editing.

I would have them create a new Excel file but it has a ton of formatting and
such so it would be a serious hassle.

Thanks,
Blaine

Hi,

Try searching for strange files in the same directory. such as ~!<original name>.doc and delete them.

There are no strange file names, hidden or otherwise, in the directory, just
..xls files. ?????

Hi Blaine,

Thanks for your posting. Please try the following steps and see how it goes:

1. Clear the temporary folders.
2. It is a known issue that excel files can be locked on the server by anti-virus program. I'd recommend
disabling any anti-virus program on the server to test the problem.
3. Please check the NTFS permission of the shared folder, give Everyone the Full Control permission and
then test the problem.

Sincerely,

I have done these things and am still getting the error. Anyone who opens
this one file gets the same error and it's only happening on this one file.

Hi Blaine,

Could you place the Excel file on another server? Verify that Everyone has the full control permission on the
shared folder and the UNC name of the file is shorter than 255 characters, and then try to access the file
from some client. Does the problem occur on all servers as long as you access the file via network?

Yes, I thought of that as well. The file works correctly when placed on
another server.

Hi Blaine,

Can you confirm that this issue doesn't occur if you place the problematic file on another server? Can you
create a copy of the old file and then test the copy? If the copy has no problem, then you can delete the old
file. You may also want to send the file to me via email, my email address is (e-mail address removed).

The problem does not occur if:
you place the file on your local drive.
you place the file on another server.

I have tried to rename the file, save it as another name, place it in
another directory on the same server and it always opens with the error that
it's in use. I have even copied the file to a local drive, renamed it, and
copy it to another directory on the server and it still has the same
problem.

Yes, I have checked for .tmp files. There are none.

Hi Blaine,

If you've cleared all temp files on the server then I suspect the
server has the file locked in memory. When is the last time you
rebooted the server?

Earlier on in this issue, I did reboot the server. That cleared it up
initially however it happened again, which is why I posted. I can try once
more.

Hi Blaine,

If possible, I'd like to get a copy of the file to perform further research. Please also let me know what the

Hi Blaine,

Thanks for your update!

As William is OOF, I would like to work with you for this thread. :)

What is the OS version for the file server, Windows NT or Windows 2k? What
is the OS version for the client computer? I asked that because when you
use some antivirus products with Windows NT Server, files become locked
indefinitely. I know you may have already disabled the AV software, I just
need to confirm that.

Moreover, I'd like to recommend you go through the KB article: 814112 Files
on Network Shares Open Slowly or Read-Only or You Receive an Error
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=814112

and try the steps there to see whether it will fix the issue.

I hope the information helps. Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Arnold Gao

Hello,
File server = Win2K SP3
Client = Win2k SP3 (however, this error occurs whenever any client, XP or
Win2K, tries to open the file)

I went over the document you sent and noted the MS02-070 was already
installed. I have also checked the Norton settings and they are set
according to the Symantec document. I have disable the Norton AV service.

Suggestions please......

Hi Blaine,

Thanks for your update!

I need to have a confirmation that does this issue occur to all the Excel
files or just one Excel file?

And would you please send me that Excel file? I cannot get the one that you
have sent to William.

You may attach it to the newsgroup or send to (e-mail address removed).

Thank you for your time! & Have a nice day!

Hi Arnold,
I sent you the file via email. This issue only occurs with this one file and
only on this one server. If the file is placed on another server then it
will open with no problems.
